On a
recent trip to Maine, I got to talking to a talented, young artist named
Mallory from Colorado. She told me about Gouache paint, which is a
water soluble paint that is
thicker than watercolor. I tried it on the whiskers, mustache and hair
of the subject in this painting. My model was a photo by J. Peter
Mortimer that appeared in the November, 1980 issue of, "Arizona
Highways" magazine. Mortimer's comment on the photo was, "You really
have to go below the surface and try to show some of the inner feelings,
inner workings of a person." I tried to capture the accumulated wisdom
of this old cowboy. |
